Trump says US to terminate relation with WHO
The US president Donald Trump has said that he would formally end the US relationship with the World Health Organisation(WHO).
Trump has spoken against the multinational organisation starting with his criticism that WHO did not do enough to inform the world about the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic in China as it took the side of China in hiding the cases.
He had also earlier accused it of collaborating with the Chinese authorities to hide the real scale of the pandemic and added that it was a mere puppet of China.
He complained that China who contributed only $40 million annually to the WHO , compared to $450 million by the USA,had total control of the WHO. He said that the funds would be redirected to other worldwide public health needs.
The World Health Organization is a U.N. specialized agency an independent international body that works with the United Nations. The European Union has expressed surprise at Trump's announcement.
Public health experts and others have pointed out that defunding the World Health Organization in the middle of a global pandemic that’s claimed more than 360,000 lives and counting is far from a smart move.
