International Criminal Court (ICC) is set to formally investigate war crimes in Palestinian territories. ICC chief prosecutors have launched an investigation into the 2014 Israeli occupation of West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.
Long-awaited debate is expected to see ICC investigate war crimes committed by both Israel and Palestine. But Israel has protested, saying the matter does not fall under ICC jurisdiction. Israel has not ratified Rome Statute. However, officials have said that issue will be taken up.
Ownership disputes have escalated since Israel seized control of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem in the Middle East since 1967. Guardian quoted Chief Prosecutor Fatahou Bensouda as saying that investigations into 2014 Israeli occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza would continue.
Last month, International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered a further investigation into criminal activity in the region. ICC has the power to prosecute cases of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
