A powerful car bomb blast in western Afghanistan on Friday killed at least eight people and injured dozens more. Latest attack comes at a time when the United Nations has condemned attack, saying it targeted civilians.
Car bomb was detonated targeting police headquarters in Herat, said police. Dozens of homes and shops were badly damaged in blast, according to Jelani Farhad, a spokesman for Herat's provincial governor.
Dead included women, children and security personnel, said spokesman Farhad. Farhad said 47 people had been injured in the blast and were being treated at hospitals in Herat.
Spokesman for Afghanistan's main insurgent group, Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the blast in Herat.
However, Taliban fighters are active in the state and have carried out a number of attacks targeting security forces in recent days.
President Ashraf Ghani has blamed Taliban for Herat bombing. President Ghani said in a statement that Taliban was continuing its illegal war against its own people and had not taken any initiative to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis.
Violence in Afghanistan has been on the rise in recent months. Despite peace talks between the government and Taliban, group has targeted journalists, rights activists, government employees, lawyers and others.
Last Friday, the United Nations Security Council strongly condemned civilian-targeted attack in Afghanistan.
US President Joe Biden has said he is reviewing an agreement reached between Taliban and the United States.
