Francisco Sagasti has been appointed interim president of South American nation of Peru. Sagasti, who is also a Peruvian politician, has taken an oath of office and secrecy before parliament.
On November 9, Peru's parliament impeached former President Martin Vizcara and fired him. Vizcara resigned on November 15 after protests against the government of Manuel Merino, who was then appointed interim president.
Two protesters were killed and more than 100 were injured in what became known as "Marina Massacre." Taking the oath of office, Sagasti expressed sorrow over the loss of life and property during the demonstrations in defense of democracy.
Sagasti pledged to mobilize the entire mechanism to search for missing persons during the protest.
President Sagasti said last demonstration was against COVID-19 and that preparations were being made for the April 11, 2021 presidential election. Sagasti's interim government has been tasked with holding presidential elections in April next year.
