Supporters of President-elect Joe Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris have gathered at Wilmington in Delaware to celebrate their win against US President Donald Trump.
The president-elect Joe Biden was greeted with loud cheers as he took the stage. He thanked supporters and said, “I do not see red states and blue states, but only the United States.”
‘I am proud of the campaign that we put together. It was the most diverse campaign that was put together,” Joe Biden said.
“I would also thank African Americans who stood by me. I have your back as you had by back,” Joe Biden further added thanking minority communities for voting for him.
He also reached out to Trump supporters and said that it would be hard to reach out to them but they are also a major part of the nation-building process.
“It’s time for our better angels to prevail,” Joe Biden said in a bid to unite a polarised nation, which had become the epicenter of global political drama over the past week as the world awaited the results of the US election.
Vice-president elect Kamala Harris thanked supporters and said, “‘You chose hope, decency, science, and truth. You chose Joe Biden.”
Harris also thanked Joe Biden for selecting her as a running mate and also told women across America and said, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I might not be the last. America has sent out a message, every little girl watching tonight now knows that it is a country of possibilities.”
Kamala Harris in her speech specially mentioned how African American women are often overlooked and how they form the backbone of the United States.
“Tonight I want to reflect on their struggle and determination to see what can be unburdened by what has been and I stand on their shoulders,” she said.
She said that every American has acted and has to struggle continuously to protect democracy in America. “You ushered in a new day for America,” she said. She said her supporters ensured that more people became part of the democratic process.
Kamala Harris also tried to reach out to a divided nation and said that she will be an able vice-president for all Americans and work towards healing the ‘soul of the nation’.
She further added, “America is ready, and so is Joe and I.”
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were also joined with their spouses at the stage in Chase Center, Wilmington Delaware. Joe and Jill Biden, Kamala, and husband Douglas Emhoff were also joined by their family members on stage later as supporters danced to Steve Winwood’s ‘Bring me a higher love’ and Hall and Oates ‘You make my dream come true’ at the end of their victory speech.
