About 8 percent of the inmates currently in prisons will be able to pay the remaining prison sentences at home as an 'alternative prison'.
According to a report prepared by the Department of Prison Management after a month, the number of inmates qualifying to live in alternative prisons is 1,200.
Alternative prisons allow inmates who are not on the "negative" list and have already served two-thirds of their sentences but have more than a year left to stay at home or to stay in jail only one day or night on weekends.
According to the department, the number of prisoners and detainees who have been convicted by the court and are on trial is about 25,000. Of them, the number of convicts sentenced by the court is 14,500. The share of prisoners serving their sentences is 58 percent.
