Demand for electricity decreases as electricity wasted

Electricity has been wasted due to low demand of electricity in Dashain festival.

According to Lekhnath Koirala, Acting Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority, electricity is being wasted due to the closure of various factories, commercial malls and institutions.

Acting Executive Director Koirala said that up to 200 MW is being wasted daily in Nepal for some time now. Koirala said that NEA will move ahead by formulating a long-term strategy even though it has no option to immediately increase the consumption of wasted electricity.

NEA informed that electricity will be provided for irrigation, agricultural production, electric vehicles and consumers will be encouraged to use induction stoves to consume wasted electricity.

Decision to increase taxes on electric vehicles and electronic equipment has discouraged domestic consumption. Acting Executive Director Koirala said that the tender process is underway to construct charging stations in all the seven states for the consumption of wasted electricity.

Similarly, Koirala said that there is no need to import electricity from India as the electricity generated in Nepal is already being consumed.

Acting Executive Director Koirala said that most of the electricity generated from Nepal is used during morning and evening peak hours. According to NEA, amount of electricity to be wasted at night has increased after rains stopped and water flooded the rivers.
