Mahasthami festival celebrated on the day of Ashwin Shukla. Ashtami is celebrated on Saturday in the form of Bada Dashain with special worship of Durga Bhawani. Mahashtami, the eighth day of Navratri, is celebrated with special worship of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. Mahakali, Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati are worshiped on Saturday at various Shakti Peeths.
In ancient times, it is customary to worship Daksha Prajapati on the day of Ashtami by destroying his sacrifice. It is customary to sacrifice goats, chickens, ducks, calves, etc. to the goddess. On the day of Ashtami, people offer worship to their family goddess, goddess and local goddess. Vegetarians offer fruits such as coconuts, kubindo, bananas, etc.
On the day of Ashtami, parts, weapons and vehicles are specially cleaned and worshiped at the place where the goddess is established. These instruments are worshiped as weapons of the goddess. Goddess is worshiped by invoking Chaturangini army along with her weapons. Due to corona virus infection, a small number of worshipers have been worshiped at Shakti Peeths in different parts of the country, including Kathmandu Valley. Similarly, temple of Taleju Bhawani in Kathmandu was opened to the public on Ashtami Day last year but it was not opened this year due to the risk of corona infection. In the main chowk of Dashainghar Hanuman Dhoka on Ashtami day, Taleju Bhawani was offered 54 bullocks and the same number of goats.
As Maha Ashtami is the day to make Durga Bhawani powerful, Mahalaxmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati are also worshiped with special significance.
