Perpetrators of rape should be punished severely

Women parliamentarians from all political parties represented in federal parliament have concluded that a law should be enacted to crack down on rape perpetrators.

Discussion between women parliamentarians representing House of Representatives and National Assembly at Singha Durbar on Monday concluded that initiatives should be taken to enact a law on the death penalty, taking into account international law.

Lawmakers have called for legislation to punish those who rape and kill at least 16-year-old girls. Lawmakers said that they should move ahead by amending the provision in the constitution that no one should be sentenced to death.

Lawmakers said that if international treaties were an obstacle, they should be amended as needed.

MP Binda Pade said that those involved in such incidents should be brought under the ambit of action and if the participation of people's representatives at the local level is seen, they should be removed from office immediately. In the case of rape, people's representative has also reached an agreement

During the discussion, MP Niru Devi Pal said that such incidents would not decrease unless there is a law to punish perpetrators severely.

Similarly, MP Komal Oli said that such incidents should be studied and investigated in depth as the participation of people's representatives has increased.

MP Pushpa Bhusal said that initiatives should be taken to make a law that punishes those who rape and kill a girl under 16 years of age. CPN (Maoist) MP Shanta Chaudhary also said that all should work together to make the law strict.
