The Indra Jatra, considered to be the biggest procession in the Kathmandu Valley, has started from Sunday.
The Indrajatra called Yenya, which is celebrated every year for a week from the day of Bhadashukla Duwadashi, begins.
On Sunday morning, at 8:07 a.m., there was a site to raise a lingo with a rainbow flag. But due to the corona virus infection, this time it has been limited to regular worship only.
Even though the lingo was not performed, the limited worshipers gathered at Hanumandhoka on Sunday morning and performed daily worship. In the evening on the day of Indrajatra, it is customary for the Newar community to go to Upaku by lighting a lamp in Palcha for the salvation of the father.
But due to the corona infection, the trip will not be held this time. Chairman of the Indrajatra Management Committee Gautam Ratna Shakya said that lingo raise was stopped due to the corona.
Chairman Shakya also informed that other processions would not be held this time due to Corona, though the processions were celebrated in a traditional manner.
On the day of the procession, the Newars are believed to have circled the Lichhavi-era sword-shaped city by lighting lamps and incense in Palcha in memory of the deceased relatives throughout the year.
Basantapur Durbar area, which has been rejoicing for eight days, has been deserted this time as the administration has imposed a ban to prevent the spread of the infection.
