Foreign daughters-in-law not to be granted citizenship immediately

The ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) has concluded that citizenship cannot be granted to foreign brides immediately.

A meeting of the CPN (Maoist) Secretariat held at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar on Saturday concluded that Nepali citizenship can be granted only after seven years of marriage.

Spokesperson of the CPN (Maoist) Narayan Kaji Shrestha informed that Nepali citizenship can be granted only after confirmation that the process of renunciation of foreign citizenship has started after seven years.

He said that the secretariat meeting discussed the provisions of the citizenship bill currently under consideration in the parliament and concluded on the provision of adopted citizenship that can be obtained by a foreign woman who marries a Nepali male citizen.

He also said that it has been concluded that it is appropriate for a married woman to obtain citizenship after submitting proof that she has been living in the country for seven years and has obtained citizenship or similar certificate.

However, socio-cultural and economic rights can be obtained from the day of marriage, he said. The Citizenship Bill, which has been under consideration in the Parliament since 2075 BS, was earlier discussed by the two CPN (Maoist) Chairpersons by inviting their party members from the State Management Committee.

All the parliamentarians had said that the adopted citizenship should be given only after a period of seven years. The Congress has been disagreeing with the provision.
