Bail set at $1.25 million for ex-cop charged in George Floyd’s death
Ex-cop of Minneapolis charged with the murder of African-American George Floyd has appeared in the court for the first time. The court has set a bail for $12.5 million.
Prosecutors have said that the bail amount was set keeping in mind the severity of the accusation and public outrage. The ex-cop, Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. Three other arresting officers are charged with aiding and abetting murder.
The death of Mr Floyd in May has led to global protests of which some in the US were violent confrontations. There has been a call to reform in the police.
Mr Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Mr Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes while he was being arrested in Minneapolis on 25 May. He and three fellow officers have been since fired.
Appearing at court by teleconference, Chauvin did not make any requests. He did not say anything during the 15 minutes long hearing. He was seated in a small table, handcuffed. Chauvin’s lawyers didn’t express dissatisfaction at the bail amount.
Having been shifted many times, 44 years old Chauvin is currently being held at a prison in Oak Park Heights. He will be presented before the court on June 29.
