The annual Vajrayogini Jatra is celebrated every year in Sakhu, Kathmandu. This is a major fair within the Kathmandu Valley. Sakhu is a small town located in the northeastern part of Kathmandu and has a small population compared to Kathmandu. This procession of goddess Vajrayogini is very popular among the Newars so people from different regions gather to watch this festival.
This Vajrayogini temple is located on the highest point of the Sankhu. This festival continues for 8 days. Then comes the Chariot of different Gods and Goddesses. .
Locals with excitement carry the idols of Bajrayogini Goddess in a huge chariot. The first three days goddess is brought from the temple to the town where she is established in a stay house. This is where she would be residing for 8 days.
This series includes one day of the main festival, other they offer hom fire aka in a day a far ritual. A Natha yogi also performs an elaborate ritual.
Due to the current situation of Corona, the festival continued with Limited numbers of people. This year no outsiders were welcomed in this festival.
This procession of goddesses has been going on for 300 years. It has only been recorded that in history this procession was interrupted only twice and excluding the one last year.
The goddess has a special place in the heart of people she is considered as the supreme goddess does. Not only locals, devotees from Tibet, Bhutan, India have high devotion towards her.
The Statue of the main goddess i.e. Vajrayogini has three Big Eyes, a smiling face and has four hands. In her two pairs of hands, she holds Sword, Blue lotus flower whereas the other pair holds a knife and a skull cup. Along with Goddesses Vajrayogini, the Lion faced Dakini and the Tiger faced Dakini is carried along.
Both of them have two hands. Along with them is a small statue of the goddess of wealth aka Vasundhara is also taken around by a small group of children.
The stupa is dismantled into four pieces. tenth this is kept in the Chariot which is then carried by the local people
Vajrayogini Temple is a Tantric power place in Kathmandu Valley. Sakhu Vajrayogini is a famous temple that offers the best of art and architecture.
History has it clear that King Mannadev once had a relationship with the Monastery here.
