Qatar's Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Development has set a minimum wage of 1,000 riyals for foreign workers coming to Qatar for employment.
Qatar has announced this facility in accordance with the amended law No. 17, 2020 with effect from Saturday.
With the announcement of Qatari government, from now on, all companies will have to provide a minimum salary of 1,000 riyals and other facilities. Now, work permit will be issued only if the salary facility of workers going for employment in Qatar is 1000 riyals.
Companies should also amend their employment contracts accordingly. Food and accommodation will have to be provided separately. According to the new law, if 300 riyals for food and housing facilities are not provided, an additional 500 riyals per month will be given to the workers.
In September 2020, ministry issued a new law with a six-month deadline. Qatar's announcement was hailed as historic by organizations including ILO.
Qatar is the first country in Gulf to set a minimum wage. According to ministry, Qatar has launched various orientation programs for employers and workers in various languages since the announcement was made six months ago.
Ministry of Labor expects new arrangement to create better labor relations between workers and employers and to make Qatar's labor market more organized and productive.
