Khenpo Appey Rinpoche was one of the foremost masters of the Sakya tradition. He was born in Kusé in 1927.
He was a student of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö. He has coached well-known teachers such as Sogyal Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.
At the age of nine, he became a monk at Serjong Monastery. He studied at Serjong Monastery and later at the Dzongsar Monastery.
After completing his study, He went to see Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö in Sikkim. Then returning back to Tibet he stayed at Ngor Monastery, until Chinese invasion.
Again he went to see Jamyang Khyentse right before he passed away. As per the final wishes of Jamyang Khyentse, he taught Sogyal Rinpoche in front of Jamyang Khyentse's kudung.
In order to tutor Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, he founded the Sakya College in Barlow Ganj, Mussoorie.
In 2001 he established the International Buddhist Academy in Boudhanath, Nepal. He passed away in Nepal on Tuesday 28th December 2010.
