The agri-businesses have protested against the government's decision to attract foreign investment in the agricultural sector saying that it is against the interest of farmers and entrepreneurs.
The Dairy Industry Association, Nepal Dairy Association, Central Dairy Cooperative Union Limited NEPA and Central Livestock Cooperative Union Limited held a joint press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday and demanded immediate reversal of the decision to bring foreign direct investment in agriculture including dairy. He said that there is a danger of losing the income of a large number of people due to foreign investment in agriculture at any level.
Radhakrishna Sapkota, president of the Nepal Dairy Association, said that the decision to attract foreign investment would affect rural employment.
He warned that Nepal's profits would fall into the hands of foreign investors, and the main source of income would be blocked in the development of entrepreneurship of indigenous businesses.
At present, Nepal has invested Rs 4 billion in beekeeping, Rs 11 billion in fisheries, Rs 30 billion in dairy industry and Rs 40 billion in poultry and a total investment of Rs 85 billion, creating employment for more than 1.5 million farmers and workers, he claimed.
