Protests have been staged in Kathmandu on Sunday demanding action against the killer of 12-year-old Samjhana Kami of Bajhang. Participants in a demonstration organized by Joint Political Dalit Struggle Committee on Sunday demanded death penalty for the rapist. They have demanded the government to give justice to the victims and not release the perpetrators.
Protestors said that even though such incidents have been repeated many times, culprits have been acquitted due to weak laws. Congress MP Meen Bishwakarma, who participated in the protest, said that the incidents were increasing due to lack of law enforcement. MP Bishwakarma accused the government of weakening law on violence under political influence. MP Bishwakarma said that criminals were acquitted as the police administration was distracted from business religion.
Similarly, Central Women's Department of Nepali Congress (NC) had organized a street debate to protest the incident. Participants in the street debate expressed concern that Nepali society was becoming insecure for women. CPN (Maoist) MP Ram Kumari Jhakri, who reached the street debate, said that it was necessary to review the effectiveness of the police administration. MP Jhakri said that the incidents of violence against women were repeated due to the absence of state presence in the rural areas of the country.
Samjhana BK of Musta Gaonpalika-2 of Bajhang was found dead on Wednesday evening. Her body was found naked at local Simdevata temple. Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Police have arrested 18-year-old Rajendra Bohara of the same place on the charge of being involved in the incident.
