Due to the global Corona pandemic, large investments in Nepal's transport sector are at risk.
Large investments in the transport sector appear to be at risk after the government banned public transport operations to mitigate the Corona pandemic. Although the three-month lockdown has been opened, long-distance vehicles have not yet come into operation.
Public transport has been disrupted in most parts of the country due to corona. As a result, billions of rupees invested in the sector are at risk, said Saroj Sitaula, general secretary of the National Federation of Nepali Transport Entrepreneurs.
On the one hand, short and long distance vehicles are parked in garages, while on the other hand, millions of workers working in this sector have become unemployed. More than 6 million workers are directly employed in this sector.
Sitaula said that more than 300,000 public transport vehicles across the country are stuck due to the three-month lockdown. Sitaula said that government's clear policy in the transport sector could not come.
Secretary General Sitaula also said that even though the government has opened the transport sector, it is not in a position to operate vehicles immediately.
Secretary General Sitaula said that the vehicles have been rusting and rotting for a long time and due to which there is a danger of drowning billions of rupees in this sector. According to Sitaula, it is not possible to operate vehicles even in Dashain.
Secretary General Sitaula complained that government had not implemented the agreement reached with them earlier. Secretary General Sitaula demanded that government form a monitoring and inspection committee for the operation of public transport.
