Flyovers will be constructed at five more places in Kathmandu Valley for systematic urbanization and traffic management.
According to the Department of Roads, flyovers will be constructed at five more places including Koteshwor, Baneshwor, Tripureshwor and Gaushala near under-construction tunnel at Thankot-Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola.
The detailed project report (DPR) of the flyover to be constructed in Thankot has been prepared and construction agreement has been completed.
Director General of Road Department, Keshav Kumar Sharma, informed that the contract process has been completed with the preparation of 9 DPR of the flyover to be constructed in Thankot out of the five proposed.
Similarly, a feasibility study is being carried out for the flyover to be constructed in Koteshwor with the assistance of the Japanese government, said Director General Sharma.
Stating that construction of flyovers at the remaining places would be done with the assistance of the Chinese government, Director General Sharma informed that a memorandum of understanding has been signed with China for feasibility study of flyovers at Baneshwor, Tripureshwor and Gaushala.
Stating that feasibility study will be completed in the current fiscal year, Director General , Sharma clarified that construction of these flyovers will be done with the loan assistance of the governments of China and Japan.
According to the Department of Roads, selection process is in the final stage after inviting bids for survey and design consultant for the construction of flyover connecting Ekantakuna, Gwarko and Satdobato and Chapagaun Chowk of Koteshwor-Kalanki section of the ring road.
Study of Tripureshwar-Maitighar
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has already submitted a report to the government with a suggestion to make a direct flyover from Tripureshwor to Maitighar to reduce the increasing traffic congestion on the Tripureshwor-Thapathali-Maitighar road section. With the construction of this flyover, traffic jam in Tripureshwor, Thapathali and Maitighar will be completely removed, said the report.
According to the JICA report, some land of Nepal Army's base and Tribhuvan University has to be acquired to build the flyover, but the report has stalled after army refused to provide the land due to security concerns.
JICA report states that Tripureshwor-Maitighar flyover will be one kilometer wide and four lanes wide. At present, when traveling two to three kilometers in the capital, one has to stay in a traffic jam for about 10 minutes.
Fly over budget
In the budget statement of the Fiscal Year 2077/78, it is mentioned that the first flyover of Nepal will be constructed in three places of the ring road.
Similarly, it has been mentioned in the budget that construction work of flyover and tunnel will be started in Tinkune-Koteshwor-Jadibuti section of Kathmandu after completing the feasibility study.
