Estimates of Rs 41 billion loss in tourism sector

Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has estimated that the loss in the tourism sector will be Rs 41 billion during the period.

Announcing the progress report from March 26 to date, the ministry said that according to a study conducted by the Tourism Board and the Civil Aviation Authority, the monthly loss is estimated at Rs 10 billion.

Out of the Rs 34 billion loss so far, it is estimated that Rs 7 billion will be spent on the lockdown till July 22 and a total of Rs 41 billion will be lost, said Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai. The ministry said it had sent details of the losses to the finance ministry.

According to the provision of refinancing loan from the fund at an interest rate of five percent, the time limit for filing VAT for a hotel has been increased from two months to four months.

The ministry said that rescue and development work was continued even though the tourism sector was halted during the lockdown. Minister Bhattarai said that discussions are being held with private sector entrepreneurs to play in the tourism sector.

Minister Bhattarai informed that the work of the airport was continued during the lockdown. Minister Bhattarai said that the construction work at Pokhara International Airport, Gautam Buddha International Airport and Tribhuvan International Airport was continued even during the period of lockdown.

Minister Bhattarai said that 950 foreigners were stranded in Nepal and 879 foreigners were rescued by road transport with the coordination of the Tourism Board.

Similarly, the ministry has stated that a fund of Rs 50 billion has been created through the budget keeping in mind the country's economy. Minister Bhattarai informed that a fund has been set up to address the impact on the tourism sector.
