Sub-committee formed to study and investigate deaths of person in police custody

Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee under the House of Representatives has formed a sub-committee to study and investigate the deaths of people in police custody.

A meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar on Thursday decided to form a committee to study the issue of deaths in various police custody or how extra-judicial killings took place.

Five-member sub-committee has been formed for the study and names of MPs will be decided in consultation with party's chief whips, said committee chairman Krishna Bhakta Pokharel.

Pokharel said that sub-committee has been tasked to submit the study report to the committee as soon as possible.

Meeting has decided to draw attention of the government to complete Women's Commission, Inclusive Commission, Dalit Commission and others envisaged by the constitution for the protection and promotion of human rights as soon as possible.

In meeting, committee members said that work was affected as various commissions were formed but could not be completed. MP Subash Nemwang said that commission should be completed as soon as possible.

Similarly, MP Meen Bishwakarma said that government should clarify the reasons behind the failure of commission despite its structure.

Similarly, lawmaker said that report could not be made public even though a commission was formed to investigate various incidents. Lawmaker also said that there should be an investigation into the deaths in police custody.
