Supreme Court Reduces Sentence of Former DIG Ranjan Koirala Accused of Murdering His Wife

The Supreme Court has reduced the imprisonment sentence of former DIG of the Armed Police Force Ranjan Kumar Koirala. Koirala, who is serving a life sentence for murdering his wife. He has been sentenced to eight years and six months in prison

A joint bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Jabra and Justice Tej Bahadur KC has ruled that Koirala can serve only eight and a half years in jail.

The decision made on Asar 15  has been made public only recently. The court ordered Koirala to abide by the former Civil Code. No. 188 According to Article 17 (a) of the current Criminal Offenses (Sentencing and Execution) Act, 2074 BS, it has been decided to imprison him for 8 years and 6 months. According to the decision of the Supreme Court, his prison sentence will end on Shrawan 7.

Earlier, a single bench of Kathmandu District Court Judge Mohammad Junaid Azad had convicted him of murdering his wife Geeta Dhakal on Baishakh 7, 2071 BS and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The decision of the district court was upheld by the then appellate court on Mangsir 23, 2072. Koirala had gone to the Supreme Court against the order of the then appellate court.
