Facebook’s Whatsapp payment faces hurdles
Indian watch dogs are carefully looking into a possible breach of antitrust laws by Whatsapp, owned by Facebook.
It has been learnt that Competition Commission of India(CCI) has been looking at whether Whatsapp has been utilizing its vast network of users of the messaging app to promote its payment services by abusing its market position and penetrating into the huge digital payment market of India.
The new feature would give users of Whatsapp access to a bundled payment system similar to Softtech backed Paytm and Alphabet Inc’s Google.
This comes as a way for Facebook and Whatsapp to benefit from the huge population of India who are moving towards digital literacy and opting for digital payment services.
But the move forward does not look that easy for Whatsapp, as it is being scrutinized by regulators for its attempt to use its strong user base to dominate certain sectors, and also is to face a court case filed against it regarding data storage rules.
